At Steven Zevitas Gallery’s foundation in 2003 (formerly osp gallery), exhibitions focused on painting and works on paper. In the years that followed, programming has expanded to address a wide variety of media, with a particular interest in emerging artists. Our sister company, New American Paintings, a bi-monthly publication, has followed this same interest and has collaborated with museum curators and critics to identify exceptional emerging painters for the past 25 years.  For our quarter-century anniversary, we have decided to feature artists from our annual MFA issue of New American Paintings in EIGHT EMERGING ARTISTS.  The works selected return to the foundation of the gallery, but also represent a contemporary, diverse, and radically expanded definition of painting, including video, collage, and sculpture.

In the gallery today are nods to past histories and staples of painting that we have seen reimagined and redefined in the publication for two and a half decades (figuration, abstraction, minimalism, assemblage, etc.), mixed with topical, timely issues, e.g., toxic whiteness and masculinity, consumer/commodity culture, and passive, routine existence. These artists represent an upcoming generation engaging in the conversation of what it means to be a contemporary painter.
